Singapore | 1 July 2017

This presentation focuses on how other learning areas can provide context for learning ideas in early numeracy. We look at a range of example from the use of stories to snack preparation to art activities that provide context for learning.

Children do not learn in structured fashion. They do not learn through worksheets. They enjoy activities. They get inspired by picture books.

During the presentation I talked about how teachers  can assess children's learning through varied tasks. And how a rich task can provide challenge to students who are ready for them.

I used examples from Up, Down, All Around - a new programme that is based on my research on early learning through contexts.

Note that the tenth percentile score for Singapore students is slightly higher than the international average indicating that it is possible for the lowest  achievers to learn adequately.

How do we train teachers? Throughout the session we discussed macro factors like these and also classroom factors like the ones below.
Classroom factors - theory-driven approaches.
